Punch In / Punch Out

Punching in and out lets you re-record a specific section of a track without affecting the rest.

Time Selection Auto Punch

Time Selection Auto Punch lets you define a section for re-recording so Reaper automatically punches in and out at the boundaries.

Setting Time Selection:

  • Click and drag on the timeline to select the section you want to replace.

Configuring Recording Mode:

  • Right-click the record button at the bottom of your toolbar.
  • Select “Record mode: Time Selection Auto Punch”.

Setting Up Pre-roll:

  • In the metronome/pre-roll settings, activate pre-roll before recording. This plays back a few seconds before the time selection so the performer can get in sync.
  • Pre-roll also makes it easier to edit between the new recording and the surrounding material.

Selected Item Auto-Punch

Selected Item Auto-Punch is useful when you have multiple sections across the track that need re-recording.

Slicing and Selecting Items:

  • Use the split tool to slice the track at the beginning and end of each section you want to re-record.
  • Select these individual items — Reaper will only record over the selected items.

Recording:

  • Hit the record button. Reaper automatically punches in and out of the selected items.

Comping and Finalizing:

  • After recording, comp the takes to choose the best parts of each recording.
