Lab: Advanced Audio Enhancement

Duration: ~60-75 minutes
Objective: Practice the advanced enhancement techniques from Tuesday’s lecture in Adobe Audition. You will repair clicks and pops, reduce steady background noise, test dereverberation, and defend your order of operations on a mixed-problem recording. You will use DNSMOSPro to compare the original and processed versions after each major step.

What to submit: Each exercise ends with a Turn in block. Submit one Word document (.docx) with short answers organized by exercise number, plus your processed WAV files, to the D2L assignment.
If you do not finish during class, complete the remaining work at home and submit it by the assignment deadline.
Part 1: Setup and Baseline (~10 minutes)⌗
Exercise 1: Install DNSMOSPro and Inspect the Files⌗
Download the lab files from the D2L assignment page and place them in a folder on your desktop named Week9_Enhancement_Lab.

Download the DNSMOSPro release artifact that matches your operating system:

Try the GUI artifact first. If it does not launch or work correctly on your machine, follow the normal Python installation and usage instructions from the DNSMOSPro GitHub repo instead.
Open DNSMOSPro and score each original file before you process anything. Record the baseline score for all eight files.
Open each file in Adobe Audition.
For each file:
- Listen once without making changes.
- Switch between waveform view and spectral frequency display.
- Identify the main problem type.
- Decide what tool you would try first.
Turn in:

- Report the baseline DNSMOSPro score for all eight original files.
- What is the primary problem category for each file or folder set?
- Which file most clearly requires waveform repair before any denoising?
- Which files seem most likely to benefit from a captured noise print?
Part 2: Noise Print Reduction (~15 minutes)⌗
Exercise 2: Clean the Noise-Print Set⌗
Open these three files:

For each file:
- Find a short section that contains noise but no speech.
- Select that region.
- Use Effects > Noise Reduction / Restoration > Capture Noise Print.
- Select the full file.
- Open Noise Reduction (Process) and start conservatively.
- Preview your settings before applying them.
- Avoid metallic or watery artifacts.
- Export your result as:
clip_1_noise_cleaned.wavclip_2_noise_cleaned.wavclip_3_noise_cleaned.wav
- Run DNSMOSPro on each processed file and compare it with its baseline.
You may also try Audition’s DeNoise or Adaptive Noise Reduction on one or more of the files if you want to compare approaches. If you do, treat those as alternative versions and explain whether they worked better or worse than a captured noise print workflow.
Use this rule of thumb:
- Noise Reduction (Process) is best for relatively constant noise that stays present throughout the waveform, such as hiss, HVAC, or hum. In the context of our Tuesday lecture, this is the closest match to the spectral-subtraction style workflow.
- Adaptive Noise Reduction is better when the background noise changes over time, such as shifting room noise, rumble, or wind.
- DeNoise is a simpler denoising option with fewer controls, so it can be useful for a quick comparison or a light first pass.

After processing, compare:
- original vs processed by listening
- baseline vs processed DNSMOSPro score
Turn in:
- Word doc questions:
- For each of the three clips, what noise-only region did you use for the noise print?
- What settings did you use for each file?
- Report the original and processed DNSMOSPro scores for all three clips.
- If you tried DeNoise or Adaptive Noise Reduction, how did that result compare with Noise Reduction (Process)?
- Which of the three files improved the most?
- Did you hear any new artifacts after denoising?
Part 3: Click and Pop Repair (~10 minutes)⌗
Exercise 3: Restore Short Transients⌗
Open forensic_with_clicks_pops.wav.
- Inspect the file in waveform view for abrupt discontinuities.
- Switch to spectral view to look for short vertical broadband events.
- Repair the file using one or both of these approaches:
- Automatic Click Remover
- Click/Pop Eliminator
- manual spot repair / healing on isolated defects
- Re-listen after each change.
- Export your best version as
forensic_with_clicks_pops_repaired.wav. - Run DNSMOSPro on the repaired file and compare it with the original.
Do not apply broadband denoise first unless you can justify it.

- Which tool worked better for this file: Automatic Click Remover, Click/Pop Eliminator, or manual repair?
- What was the original DNSMOSPro score, and what was the repaired score?
- Why is click repair usually performed before heavy noise reduction?
Part 4: Dereverberation with Restraint (~10 minutes)⌗
Exercise 4: Test DeReverb Carefully⌗
Open these three files:
verb 1.wavverb 2.wavverb 3.wav
For each file:
- Listen for smeared consonants and room tail.
- Open Audition’s DeReverb tool and begin with conservative settings.
- Preview carefully.
- Apply only enough processing to improve intelligibility.
- If the result sounds hollow, phasey, or damaged, back off.
- Export your best version as:
verb 1_dereverb.wavverb 2_dereverb.wavverb 3_dereverb.wav
- Run DNSMOSPro on each processed file and compare it with the original.
Remember: DeReverb often has stronger side effects than simple filtering.
Turn in:
- Word doc questions:
- For each verb file, what was the main audible sign of reverberation?
- What settings did you use for each file?
- Report the original and dereverb DNSMOSPro scores for all three files.
- Which file responded best to dereverb, and which one broke down fastest when pushed too far?
- Would you present your processed versions as evidence, or would you keep the originals as primary and use the processed files only as aids? Explain.
Part 5: Mixed-Problem File and Order of Operations (~15 minutes)⌗
Exercise 5: Defend Your Workflow⌗
Open enhancement_combo.wav.
Your task is not just to improve the file. Your task is to choose and defend a sensible sequence of steps.
- Inspect the waveform and spectrogram.
- Write down your proposed order of operations before you process anything.
- Apply your steps one at a time.
- Save an intermediate version after each major step.
- Export your final version as
enhancement_combo_final.wav. - Run DNSMOSPro on the original, at least one intermediate version, and the final version.
Recommended naming:
enhancement_combo_step1.wavenhancement_combo_step2.wavenhancement_combo_step3.wavenhancement_combo_final.wav
Turn in:
- Word doc questions:
- What order of operations did you choose, and why?
- Report the DNSMOSPro scores for the original, one intermediate version, and the final version.
- Which step produced the biggest improvement?
- Which step carried the most risk of over-processing?
- If you had to testify about this enhancement, what would you document in your notes?
Part 6: Reflection (~5 minutes)⌗

Choose one file from today’s lab and explain a limit of enhancement.

- Which Audition tool felt most reliable today, and why?
- Which tool felt easiest to misuse?
- Did DNSMOSPro always agree with what you heard? If not, describe one mismatch.
- Give one example of a situation where a file should be processed less, not more.
